One of the best drives in Kenya
Down the escarpment, along the lakes, and on to the Mara. Flying over it defeats the object.

Why drive it
Because the alternative is a forty-five-minute flight in which Kenya is a green blur, and because the escarpment road gives a trip a sense of geography that flying between airstrips never does.
You come down off the Nairobi highlands with the whole Rift laid out below, drive past the lakes, and arrive at the Mara having understood how the country fits together.
The case against
It costs you time. Nairobi to the Mara direct is five to six hours with a rough final stretch. Broken over the Rift Valley it is two comfortable days — but those are two days you are not on a game drive.
With seven nights or fewer, fly to the Mara and skip the Rift. With ten or more, drive it.
The version we suggest most
One night at Naivasha — boat trip, hippo, and walking on Crescent Island. One night at Nakuru — rhino and fever trees. Then on to the Mara for three.
Five nights, two of them breaking a drive that would otherwise be a brutal day, and you have seen three completely different landscapes.
Practicalities
- The main roads are good tarmac; the last stretch into the Mara is not
- A private vehicle and driver-guide throughout is the norm on this route and makes it work
- Nairobi to Naivasha is under two hours; Naivasha to Nakuru about an hour
- Nakuru to the Mara is four to five hours — the reason the stop exists
