A flock of flamingos on a shallow lake

Rift Valley

Come for the rhino, not the flamingos

Lake Nakuru made its name on a wall of pink that is no longer reliably there. What it does have is some of the most dependable rhino viewing in Kenya — and a forest unlike anywhere else on your itinerary.

The honest bit

What happened to the flamingos

Water levels in the Rift Valley lakes rose substantially from around 2013. That diluted Nakuru’s alkalinity, reduced the algae lesser flamingos feed on, and a great many of the birds moved to other lakes in the chain.

They have not gone entirely and numbers fluctuate. But the wall of pink in the photographs is not what the lake currently holds, and every site still leading with that image is showing you something old.

  • Flamingos are present but variable — treat them as a bonus
  • Lake Bogoria has generally been the more reliable flamingo lake in recent years
  • What Nakuru does have: white and black rhino, close to dependably
  • Plus Rothschild’s giraffe, which you will not see in the Mara

Before you ask

The questions we get most

Will I see flamingos at Lake Nakuru?

Some, probably. Not the vast flocks of the older photographs. Water levels rose from around 2013, the lake became less alkaline, the algae declined and many birds moved elsewhere in the Rift chain.

If flamingos are specifically what you want, Lake Bogoria has generally been the more reliable bet. Say so and we will route you there instead.

Is Lake Nakuru worth a night on the way to the Mara?

If you are driving, yes. It breaks a five-to-six-hour day into two manageable ones and adds rhino and a completely different landscape for one extra night.

If you are flying to the Mara, skip it. The detour costs you more than it gives.

Nakuru or Ol Pejeta for rhino?

Ol Pejeta, if rhino are the point — more of them, better access, and night drives and walking that a national park cannot offer.

Nakuru if you are already driving the Rift Valley, because then it costs you nothing extra.

How long do we need?

One night. The park is small and fenced, and an afternoon drive plus a morning drive covers it properly. Two nights only if you are also doing Naivasha or Hell’s Gate.
